Anambra First Lady Reacts to Anulika Onyeanusia Case, Calls for Probe

The arrest of 36 year old Anulika Onyeanusia in Onitsha has drawn a strong response from Anambra First Lady, Dr Nonye Soludo, who has called for a full investigation into the alleged abuse of a child.

Onyeanusia was arrested by the Anambra State Police Command on September 10 after police received information about a disturbing video circulating online.

The police said the operation also led to the rescue of four children from the residence.

What the police said

According to the Anambra State Police Command, Onyeanusia was arrested in connection with an alleged child pornography case in Onitsha.

Police spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga said officers acted on information obtained through open-source intelligence concerning a video allegedly showing a woman using sex toys on a minor.

Four children, aged two, three, six and nine, were rescued during the operation.

Police also recovered sex toys and other items they said could help with the investigation.

The suspect remains in custody while officers investigate what happened and whether anyone else was involved.

Nonye Soludo speaks on the case

Reacting to the report, Dr Nonye Soludo said she was deeply disturbed by the allegations.

She called on the police to carry out a thorough investigation and establish the full facts of the case.

She also said anyone found responsible should face the law after due process.

But her main concern was what happens to the children after their rescue.

Soludo called for medical, psychological, social and rehabilitation support to help the children recover.

She also urged parents, guardians, neighbours and members of the public to speak up when they notice anything that could put a child in danger.

Four children were rescued

The four children rescued during the police operation are aged two, three, six and nine, according to the police.

The command said their safety and wellbeing were being prioritised and that it would work with relevant child protection agencies to provide the necessary care and support.

The police also said the identities and privacy of the children would be protected during the investigation and any subsequent legal proceedings.

The suspect's husband was also questioned by police as investigators tried to determine whether he had any connection to the alleged offence.

Husband says he discovered the alleged abuse through a video

Ikechukwu Onyeanyusi, the suspect's husband, said a friend showed him a video involving his wife and their daughter.

He said he was returning from his business when the friend brought the video to his attention.

According to his account, he recognised both his wife and daughter in the video and later confronted his wife.

He said she initially denied what was shown in the video and claimed it had been created using artificial intelligence.

The husband's account was reported separately as police continued their investigation.

What happens next?

Onyeanusia remains under investigation over the allegations.

Reports have also emerged that investigators are looking into an alleged financial motive, including a claim that the suspect told police she had made up to $300 from material involving her eight-year-old daughter.

That claim was attributed to the police investigation and has not been established by a court.

The police investigation is expected to establish what happened, whether anyone else was involved and what charges may follow.

For the four children rescued from the home, the immediate concern is their safety and access to the support they need while the investigation continues.
